Niko Green Travels is the brainchild of Ken Obat, a travel professional with more than a decade of experience in the travel and hospitality business; and Nickson Otieno, an architect and sustainability expert with a proven record in design and successful implementation of community development and environmental sustainability projects including development of green standards and certification programs.
We intend to use tourism as a social enterprise for community development and for the conservation of the natural resources upon which tourism and the society at large depend, rather than just a profit making venture.
Our key motivation around this venture stems from our life experiences - from the poor upbringing in a rural setting to education and to the privilege to travel the world.
Throughout our primary and secondary schooling, we went to village schools without basic facilities. In the face of poverty and lack of finances, we cut hundreds of trees to burn charcoal in order to support our survival in school and take care of other needs. Thanks to education, we have been privileged to travel and enjoy the beauty that nature offers. On the other hand, we have also experienced how tourism can hurt the natural environment on which we all depend. It is in light of this that we are committed to using tourism as a means for resource conservation and community development.
